

Centrally located in the western Sichuan Plain, Chengdu,
the capital of Sichuan Province, is renowned for its
fertile land and agricultural wealth which have earned
the city the nickname "Storehouse of Heaven".
Chengdu,
a well-known city with a longstanding history and civilization,
comprises five districts and 12 counties with a total
population of 8,873,000. Through the city flows the
Jinjiang River (River of Brocade). In the downtown
area, long and wide avenues flanked by high-rise buildings
and local shops and stores are dotted with luxurious
green trees, and well-trimmed flowerbeds. Indeed, it
is a beautiful city full of vigor and vitality. Besides
the local teahouses, snack bars and bazaars (also known
as free markets) are still the popular places for tourists
to frequent. One can either taste the typical Sichuan
cuisine, local wine and tea or purchase local special
products such as Shu embroidery pieces, bamboo-woven
porcelain-ware and lacquer-ware or familiarize oneself
with local folklores and customs.
Customs
Travelers are allowed to bring into China one bottle
of alcoholic beverages and two cartons of cigarettes.
There is no limit on the amount of foreign currency
(although amounts above US$10,000 must be declared on
a customs form).
